Get Into Construction

Case Study – Jamie, 17, Unemployed 2 months

Jamie, aged 17, from Luton in Bedfordshire participated in the Get Into Construction programme which ran Luton in July 2009

Prior to participating in this programme Jamie had completed the 1st year of an electricians course at college, however not keen on returning to college he started looking for work. Unfortunately for he had no CSCS card and no experience, which meant that he was constantly being overlooked by employers.

Unsure what to do he joined the Get Into Construction programme, where he had the opportunity to gain construction skills through the City & Guilds 6217 in Basic Construction Skills qualification, a CSCS cards, and the opportunity to gain work experience through participating in community projects.

Jamie said:

“Before I joined the Get Into Construction programme I had been at college studying electrical engineering, l found it really hard going and difficult to keep up, and I didn’t really want to back.

I felt really flat, and fed-up, my confidence and motivation was low, I thought easiest thing to do was to go and get myself a job, but I didn’t realise that it wasn’t as easy as that. I had no site experience, and CSCS card.

I thought that I would join the Get Into Construction programme because it offered my a chance to try a different area of the construction industry, to gain qualifications and work experience that would help me to move forward. It also gave me the opportunity to access further training and development through apprenticeship routes which I hadn’t previously been able to access”

At the end of the programme Jamie joined a brickwork apprenticeship programme, at Ridgemond Training.

“This programme has helped me to understand the construction industry, and the routes into jobs. It has also given me the chance to learn about and access the apprenticeship programme

I now have a really opportunity to learn a trade that I will be able to hopefully build a career for myself, without this programme I feared that I would be unemployed looking for work”
